The Sonex Aircraft, LLC E-Flight Initiative proof-of-concept electric-powered Waiex aircraft achieved its first flight today, December 3, 2010 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, WI. Piloted by Sonex Founder and E-Flight team leader John Monnett, N270DC made a short hop on runway 27, intended to be a conservative non-pattern flight to break ground-effect and analyze in-flight system performance as the next step in testing. This short flight punctuates four years of development by the E-Flight design team in engineering, building and testing one of the most advanced electric flight packages ever conceived.
“We are very proud of this achievement. The core design team of Pete Buck, Andrew Pearce, John Monnett, and myself would like to thank our staff, families, business partners, and friends in all of their help and understanding through this incredibly challenging project.” Said Jeremy Monnett, CEO and General Manager of Sonex Aircraft. “We have a flight envelope expansion plan and will be working on this in the coming weeks and months. We have also already started our motor v4.0 design and motor controller v12.0 to be integrated on N270DC. Many more great things to come on this project!” |

The Slovenian company's Taurus Electro can climb to 6,000 feet after taking off on a 30-kilowatt motor. Recharging the glider's lithium-polymer battery is meant to take about as long as powering a cell phone. Depending upon the weather and skills of the pilot, the glider can travel 1,000 miles in a day. |

At each major premiere, the adventurers of the last century pushed back the limits of the impossible. Today, human and technical enquiry must go on, with a view to improving the quality of life for humanity. By writing the next pages in the history of aviation with solar energy, as far as a flight around the world without fuel or pollution is concerned, Solar Impulse's ambition is to contribute in the world of exploration and innovation to the cause of renewable energies. To demonstrate the importance of the new technologies in sustainable development, and of course, once again, to place dream and emotion at the heart of scientific adventure. |

Advantages of electric propulsion:
The near silent motor and large, low RPM propeller provide quiet flying enjoyment. No earplugs!
Improved neighbor relations. Possible extra flying sites due to quiet operation.
No handling of smelly gasoline and oil. No soot or dirt.
Sturdy electric motor. No engine maintenance; no disassembly to clean out carbon, no top overhauls, no carburetor adjustments, no expensive major overhauls.
Dependable, no hassle starting, just turn the power dial.
Instant, sure, restart for soaring applications.
Just plug your charger into any 110 outlet to “refuel” our machine. Approx. $0.60 for a full charge. Easily and quickly removable battery packs.
Choose the battery capacity you need.
Small, high discharge rate pack for self launch glider.
Medium pack for light weight; good duration and soarability.
Large pack for longest duration. One to two hours without lift depending on the efficiency of the wing you use.
No vibration. Electric motor with well balanced, slow turning propeller provides vibration free flight.
The closest thing to a magic carpet ride ever attained. Enjoy! |

Lightweight environmentally friendly batteries with high performance, a brushless 42 kW external rotor electric motor, new power electronics and a large slowly rotating propeller were developed into one system and tailored especially for the Antares 20E into an optimized configuration. For the first time, a complete propulsion system has been developed exclusively for one motorglider.
The results are convincing: The Antares 20E combines a high climb rate (approx. 4.4 m/s / 866 ft/min during takeoff) with a very high attainable climb altitude (approximately 3000 m / 9850 ft in calm air) and very low noise emission. |

This single-seater ultralight motorglider is manufactured by the Ukrainian company Aerola and distributed in France by Randkar (Frossay – Loire Atlantique). The electrical motorization E-Motors is developed by Electravia, and is already implemented on the plane "Electra" and on the delta trikes "ElectroTrike". The motor delivers 26 hp and is powered by a Lithium-Polymer battery.
Michel Sérane, Electravia's test pilot, has checked all flight configurations of the motorglider. Altitude gain is 2.100 m. Alatus flight endurance in calm weather is 1h07. This duration is the longest logged one on aircraft equipped with batteries at present.
The Alatus-M offers advantages of different aircraft: comfort and performances of glider, compactness of hangglider and ease of use of an ultralight. Electrical motor is reliable, clean, silent, economic and easy to maintain. Alatus with electrical motor becomes a 100% ecological motorglider for nature lover and environment-friendly's pilots.
Alatus-ME is also the cheapest motorglider on the market. It will be available end of spring, 2009, after complete validation of its test program. |

Welcome to SilentFlight and DESiE Meanwhile there is no doubt that you can fly more than ten minutes using electric powered aeroplanes, especially motorgliders or ultralights. The new generation of Li-Polymer batteries and its derivates are powerful enough even for the LSA class. We started our homebuilt »DESiE« in 1993. At that time my colleagues of the applied electrochemistry at the ICT (Fraunhofer Society) already developed a high power Li/LiCoO2 battery in their lab. So it was clear, that in near future the energy density of Li-Ion batteries could reach 200Wh/kg. Our airplane is uncompromisingly focussed on the efficient use of the provided energy storage. The tail-first configuration and the overall cleanness of the design give a forefeeling to what the glider may capable in flight. With a »little help from outside« the maiden flight will be possible in 2012 |
