Big Cat Electric was founded by a couple who in entirely different ways have grasped the vision for electric bikes in the second decade of the 21st Century. The lady was the first to be convinced when she tried an electric bike in 2009 and persuaded her husband that this was the next ‘big thing’. Her husband’s background is in investment banking and he quickly saw the potential to take electric bikes from a niche business based in a Garden Centre or a suburban shopping street to something which could be developed nationally and even internationally. He worked for two companies in 2010 but slowly discovered in both of them the same limited vision and lack of willingness to invest and grow which he has found plagues the industry.
Current state of the UK Industry
The electric bike business in 2011 is still in its infancy in the UK. We estimate 15,000 electric bikes were sold in 2010. This compares to over 100,000 units in each of Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Why is the UK so far behind? The market for bikes in the UK exceeds 3 million units – penetration of electric bikes is well below 1%, compared to over 12% in Germany.
There are a number of small independent electric bike retail operations scattered across the UK, importing bikes manufactured in mainland China. The R&D had been carried out a while ago in Chinese, and the technology had been primarily developed for the Chinese domestic market. These imports were built to a tight budget, and provided relatively large gross margins to the UK retailer. Thus there was little impetus to sell large numbers of bikes which resulted in a lack of willingness to spend significantly on marketing and so to gear up sales. |
